Each bite offers a delightful contrast of textures—soft and pillowy with a slightly crisp edge. The savory twist adds depth, making it perfect for those who crave something beyond the usual sweetness. Whether you’re rushing out the door or enjoying a lazy morning, this recipe delivers big flavor with minimal effort.

What You’ll Need

What You'll Need
  • 1 egg
  • 5 tablespoons milk (any type works, but whole milk adds richness)
  • 5 tablespoons white bread, cubed (roughly 1 slice; stale bread works great)
  • 3 tablespoons grated cheddar (substitute with your favorite cheese)
  • 3 tablespoons cooked ham (diced; bacon or sausage are tasty alternatives)
  • Salt and pepper to taste

How to Make It

  1. In a microwave-safe mug, whisk together the egg and milk until well combined.
  2. Add the bread cubes, ham, cheese, and a pinch of salt and pepper. Stir until everything is evenly coated.
  3. Let the mixture sit for 5 minutes, pressing the bread down occasionally to ensure it soaks up the custard.
  4. Microwave on high for 1½ – 2 minutes. Start checking at 1 minute—the French toast is done when it’s set and no longer runny. (Timing may vary based on your microwave’s wattage.)
  5. Serve immediately while still warm. Enjoy your quick and savory treat!

Perfect Pairings: Sauce and Topping Ideas

Elevate your Microwave Mug Savory French Toast with a drizzle of sriracha mayo or a dollop of sour cream for a creamy kick. For a fresh twist, top with chopped chives or sliced avocado. If you’re feeling indulgent, a sprinkle of crumbled bacon adds a smoky crunch!

Quick and Easy Serving Suggestions

Serve your savory French toast straight from the mug for a cozy, no-fuss meal. Pair it with a side salad or roasted cherry tomatoes for a balanced bite. It’s also perfect alongside a cup of hot coffee or fresh orange juice for a satisfying breakfast or snack.

Time-Saving Tips for Busy Mornings

Prep your ingredients the night before! Cube the bread, grate the cheese, and chop the ham so you can quickly assemble in the morning. If you’re doubling the recipe, use two mugs and microwave them one at a time for even cooking.

Recipe Variations to Mix It Up

Swap the ham for cooked sausage or turkey bacon for a different protein. Try mozzarella or pepper jack cheese for a new flavor profile. For a vegetarian option, skip the meat and add sautéed spinach or sliced mushrooms.

Microwave Mastery: Equipment Guidance

Use a microwave-safe mug that’s at least 12 oz to prevent overflow. If your microwave wattage differs from 1200W, start checking at 1 minute and adjust as needed. For even cooking, stir halfway through if the mixture looks uneven.
